Course overview

Our online Ukrainian course is suitable for children and adults. You can start from scratch, follow the Ukrainian school curriculum, improve your writing accuracy or practise speaking.

The programme includes preparatory, beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Your teacher determines where to start based on your knowledge and goals.

Individual lessons last 45 minutes and take place on Google Meet or Zoom in real time. We agree on the schedule in advance. Lessons can be taught in Ukrainian, Russian or English — we choose the language of communication before lessons begin.

Our teachers are native Ukrainian speakers with university degrees in philology and experience teaching children and adults.

We recommend two lessons a week and completing homework between lessons. Students receive a school certificate upon completing each level.

Teaching approach

Our approach to teaching Ukrainian is based on an individual programme. The teacher finds out what the student already knows and what they find difficult. For schoolchildren, they consider the student’s grade level, textbook and the topics currently covered at school. With adult learners, they discuss what they need the language for.

Reading, speaking and writing complement each other. For example, after reading a text, students can discuss its content, retell a passage or write a response to a question it raises. The teacher checks whether students can use the vocabulary and rules they have learnt independently and plans future lessons accordingly.

Preparatory level

At the preparatory level, children become familiar with Ukrainian sounds and letters. They learn to understand simple questions, name objects around them and respond with short phrases. Pictures, games and songs help them remember new words.

They gradually move on to reading syllables, short words and simple sentences. To prepare for writing, they complete tracing and hatching exercises and try writing letters. The difficulty of the exercises depends on the child’s readiness.

Beginner level

Students learn to talk about themselves, ask questions and hold short conversations in Ukrainian. They study basic grammar rules and work on pronunciation and word stress.

They read short texts, listen to dialogues and answer questions about the content. Writing assignments include sentences, messages and simple descriptions. Students use familiar vocabulary in new communication situations.

Intermediate level

At the intermediate level, students describe events in greater detail, explain their opinions and discuss what they have read. They learn to build complex sentences and choose words that express their ideas more precisely.

They write retellings and compositions in Ukrainian, organise their ideas in a logical order and divide texts into paragraphs. They check spelling and punctuation and review errors in wording. After listening to stories and dialogues, they discuss what they have heard and the important details.

Advanced level

Students work with literature by Ukrainian authors, articles and other texts in different styles. They explore subtle differences in word meanings, fixed expressions and more challenging aspects of grammar. During discussions, they learn to support their views with arguments and give detailed answers.

Depending on their goals, students can focus more on compositions, business correspondence or preparing talks. The teacher helps them edit their own texts: correct mistakes, remove repetition and choose wording appropriate to the purpose and audience.

Course goals

Grammar and spelling: understand Ukrainian language rules, use the correct word forms, build sentences and punctuate them correctly.

Vocabulary: learn new words and expressions, distinguish between their meanings and use them appropriately in communication.

Speaking: maintain a dialogue, describe events clearly, ask follow-up questions and explain your point of view.

Reading and listening comprehension: understand the content of a text or conversation, find the information you need and notice important details.

Writing: express ideas in a logical order, write messages, letters and compositions, and check and edit your work.

School curriculum and exams: work through difficult topics, review material you have missed and practise completing tasks in the chosen format.

Benefits of online Ukrainian lessons

Greater independence in schoolwork: children learn to read tasks carefully, understand questions and explain their answers. This supports good performance at school.

More speaking practice: individual lessons allow time to formulate an idea, find the right words and ask questions. You can practise conversations for everyday life, study or work.

Maintaining Ukrainian while living abroad: for children studying in a different language environment, lessons provide another opportunity to read, write and speak Ukrainian. Lesson topics help them expand their vocabulary beyond everyday conversations at home.

Exploring Ukrainian culture: stories, poems, songs and videos offer opportunities to learn more about authors, traditions and the history of Ukraine. The teacher chooses materials that match the student’s level and interests.
