Course overview

The Japanese course is for children and adults. You can learn your first words and phrases, return to studying after a break or focus on conversation, reading and exam preparation.

The programme has four levels: preparatory, beginner, intermediate and advanced. The choice depends on what the student already knows and can do.

Your one-to-one lessons last 45 minutes and take place on Google Meet or Zoom. We agree on lesson times in advance. If you need explanations in Russian, Ukrainian or English, we discuss this before the course begins.

Our teachers hold university degrees and have experience teaching children and adults.

We recommend studying twice a week and setting aside time for homework. Students receive a certificate from the school after completing each level.

Teaching approach

Our approach is based on a lesson plan for each student. The teacher finds out which topics are already familiar, what the student finds difficult and in which situations they need to use Japanese.

A student may hear the same expression in a recording, read it and use it in their own answer. When practising writing, they study characters as part of familiar words. Based on the completed assignments, the teacher decides which points to revisit and what to work on next.

Preparatory level

At the preparatory level, children get used to the sound of Japanese. Pictures, games and songs help them remember the names of familiar objects, colours and numbers.

They learn to greet people and introduce themselves, understand simple requests from the teacher and respond in short phrases. They listen to short stories and find matching pictures. At this stage, we focus on listening and speaking.

Beginner level

At the first stage, students learn to greet people, introduce themselves, ask simple questions and say thank you. They practise pronunciation, listen to short phrases and choose suitable responses.

When a student is ready to read and write, they start learning hiragana and katakana and practise writing familiar words. For preschool children, the course may begin with spoken activities, games, pictures and songs.

Intermediate level

At this level, students move on to longer answers: they describe events, clarify details, compare options and explain their choices. They study new verb forms and the use of particles.

They read adapted short stories and articles and learn the meanings and readings of new kanji. Through letters, descriptions and short essays, they learn to link sentences, divide texts into paragraphs and check their writing.

Advanced level

They work with original texts by Japanese authors, discussing style, the author’s perspective and subtext. They learn to choose expressions for formal and informal communication, give detailed answers and support their point of view with reasons.

If students need Japanese for study or work, lessons include relevant texts and correspondence. In written assignments, they focus on precise wording, organising ideas logically and editing their work.

Course goals

Grammar: understand Japanese sentence structure, the use of particles and verb forms.

Vocabulary: understand the meanings of new words and remember them in phrases you can use in conversation.

Speaking: give relevant answers, ask for clarification and explain your point of view.

Listening comprehension: follow a conversation, recognise familiar words and notice important details.

Reading and writing: recognise the characters you’ve learnt within words, understand short texts and write messages and stories.

Exam preparation: become familiar with the format of the chosen test, practise typical tasks and learn to manage your time.

Benefits of online Japanese lessons

For travel: before a trip, you can practise talking in a café, asking for directions or speaking to hotel staff.

For personal interests: over time, it becomes easier to understand Japanese in films, songs and videos, as well as texts you want to read in the original.

Learning from home: lesson times can be arranged around school and work, taking the time difference between you and your teacher into account.
